2013 AFP International Conference – Doing the Right Things…Right | CCS Philanthropy 360
2013 AFP International Conference – Doing the Right Things…Right | CCS Philanthropy 360: Last week, I had the pleasure of participating in AFP International’s 50th Annual Conference on Fundraising. While success in fundraising, like anything else, is dependent on hard work and best practices, it is the stories that inspire us to give, to serve, to lead, and compel us to ask others to do the same, that are really the foundation of philanthropy.

From Millennials to Legend, a Few Top #afpICON Highlights | CDS Global Nonprofit: This week I attended AFP’s International Conference on Fundraising (afpICON). Since it was my first time attending this event with our nonprofit team, I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect – except to know that afpICON was perhaps the largest of all the annual nonprofit conferences. I have to say, this turned out to be a truly amazing conference. And thank you to all the amazing #AFPeeps who made me feel right at home! Making new friends is by far the best takeaway.

Alert! Speakers Now Give Tweetable Insights Information Seeking: As I was honing my tweeting skills at the 2013 AFP International Conference this week, it did occur to me that some conference sessions lent themselves better to tweeting than others. In the same way that the general public has been trained to speak in news-byte sentences in the hopes of being featured on television, clearly some presenters are leading the way in presenting tweetable insights – whether they are doing it consciously or not!

Pondering the Swirl: Thoughts on Trends from the 50th AFP International Conference on Fundraising | Patton McDowell & Associates Blog: It’s Not About You…
A tangible thread through many of the sessions I attended was that development professionals too often lead communication with details about the organization, when they really should be leading with their cause and the way to affect positive outcomes. In Derrick Feldman’s Engaging the Next Generation Donor, this point was made very clearly as it relates to Millennials, who are disinterested in the trappings of organizational culture and want to cut through to how they can engage and make a difference. This was echoed by Monday’s Keynote Address (Four For Change) with young philanthropists who demonstrated how need and outcome messaging can mobilize peers to tackle the world’s most pressing problems. Hard not to get emotionally connected to the story and pure joy of Emmanuel Jal, who may have been representing a nonprofit organization in his address, but that was entirely besides the point.
