Universities gifted �40m | Herald Scotland: SCOTTISH universities received more than �40 million of philanthropic donations last year, new figures show.

Almost 20,000 people gave to a Scottish institution in the last financial year, including a total of 14,328 alumni, according to The International Council for Advancement and Support of Education (Case).

Its research shows the average university north of the Border had 1591 donors during the course of the year, donating a total of almost �2.3m.

A tangible thread through many of the sessions I attended was that development professionals too often lead communication with details about the organization, when they really should be leading with their cause and the way to affect positive outcomes. In Derrick Feldman’s Engaging the Next Generation Donor, this point was made very clearly as it relates to Millennials, who are disinterested in the trappings of organizational culture and want to cut through to how they can engage and make a difference. This was echoed by Monday’s Keynote Address (Four For Change) with young philanthropists who demonstrated how need and outcome messaging can mobilize peers to tackle the world’s most pressing problems. Hard not to get emotionally connected to the story and pure joy of Emmanuel Jal, who may have been representing a nonprofit organization in his address, but that was entirely besides the point.

It was a day of famous faces. On the exhibit floor was Sean Kelly, a stand-up comic, star of the television program “Storage Hunters” and a celebrity auctioneer. The day was capped by a discussion with and performance by award-winning performer John Legend.

3 Big Themes for Fundraisers at AFP 2013 - Nonprofit Hub: Because I’ve been nerding out about the conference and speakers, I thought I’d share some of my expectations about the conference. Obviously, there will be a ton of amazing, tactical presentations about how to ask more effectively and often, engage millennial donors and get your board into fundraising mode. This index will focus on a number of standard measurements of giving and demonstrate how many Big Macs it takes to get there.
