Donor fatigue fatigue | Pareto Fundraising
Donor fatigue fatigue | Pareto Fundraising: Right now I am in San Diego a the AFP conference, with maybe 5,000 predominately American, fundraisers. Chatting to people made me realise that Bill is not alone in misunderstanding a very basic and fundamental, unbreakable ‘truth’ of direct marketing. The truth is the recency, frequency, value rule (also known as RFV or RFM where the M stands for Monetary value).
RFV is a mathematical rule that gives you three clues about the likelihood of a positive response from a donor who is mailed.

My First Time at the AFP International Conference on Fundraising - Member News - Member - AFP
My First Time at the AFP International Conference on Fundraising - Member News - Member - AFP: A personal highlight of the conference for me was the connections that I was able to make with other fundraising professionals. I left San Diego with a variety of new relationships, each appealing to a different aspect of my fundraising career. For example, the Canadian Reception provided me with an opportunity to seek out local fundraisers who I can collaborate with and discuss the trends, opportunities and challenges in our area. The conference also did a great job at facilitating connections amongst Millennial fundraisers.

May 2013 DConnection - Seen Through the Eyes of a “First Timer” - AFP DC, Washington D.C. Metro Area Chapter: Agatha Tomasik, Development Manager at My Sister’s Place in Washington DC knew she wanted to attend an AFP International Conference; however the cost of the conference was not in her organization’s budget. After encouragement from her parents and colleagues, and months of saving, Agatha booked her flight to San Diego!
She prepared for the conference with a strategic approach – download the presentations ahead of time, research the speakers and attendees she wanted to meet, and schedule every free moment with networking opportunities. Read more about Agatha’s fresh look at AFP’s international conference with her “3 Tips for First-Timers.”

The AFP Blog: The Fundraising Community Coming Together: hope you found that sort of benefit and inspiration in San Diego—whether it was through our general sessions, like John Legend or our Four Young Philanthropists, or Marcus Buckingham’s terrific presentation on identifying and maximizing your strengths. The Association for Fundraising Professionals’ (AFP) 50th International Conference (ICON) opened in San Diego, California this week with the gathering of 3,500 fundraising professionals from across the globe. I have enjoyed the pleasure of meeting fellow fund development professionals from Canada, Japan, India, Egypt and nearly every state within the United States of America. Additionally, there were many college students whom were in attendance. They are strongly considering fund development as a profession, and they have joined AFP in the Young Professional and Collegiate membership categories.

2013 AFP International Conference – Doing the Right Things…Right | CCS Philanthropy 360
2013 AFP International Conference – Doing the Right Things…Right | CCS Philanthropy 360: Last week, I had the pleasure of participating in AFP International’s 50th Annual Conference on Fundraising. While success in fundraising, like anything else, is dependent on hard work and best practices, it is the stories that inspire us to give, to serve, to lead, and compel us to ask others to do the same, that are really the foundation of philanthropy.

From Millennials to Legend, a Few Top #afpICON Highlights | CDS Global Nonprofit: This week I attended AFP’s International Conference on Fundraising (afpICON). Since it was my first time attending this event with our nonprofit team, I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect – except to know that afpICON was perhaps the largest of all the annual nonprofit conferences. I have to say, this turned out to be a truly amazing conference. And thank you to all the amazing #AFPeeps who made me feel right at home! Making new friends is by far the best takeaway.

Alert! Speakers Now Give Tweetable Insights Information Seeking: As I was honing my tweeting skills at the 2013 AFP International Conference this week, it did occur to me that some conference sessions lent themselves better to tweeting than others. In the same way that the general public has been trained to speak in news-byte sentences in the hopes of being featured on television, clearly some presenters are leading the way in presenting tweetable insights – whether they are doing it consciously or not!

Pondering the Swirl: Thoughts on Trends from the 50th AFP International Conference on Fundraising | Patton McDowell & Associates Blog: It’s Not About You…
A tangible thread through many of the sessions I attended was that development professionals too often lead communication with details about the organization, when they really should be leading with their cause and the way to affect positive outcomes. In Derrick Feldman’s Engaging the Next Generation Donor, this point was made very clearly as it relates to Millennials, who are disinterested in the trappings of organizational culture and want to cut through to how they can engage and make a difference. This was echoed by Monday’s Keynote Address (Four For Change) with young philanthropists who demonstrated how need and outcome messaging can mobilize peers to tackle the world’s most pressing problems. Hard not to get emotionally connected to the story and pure joy of Emmanuel Jal, who may have been representing a nonprofit organization in his address, but that was entirely besides the point.

3 Big Themes for Fundraisers at AFP 2013 - Nonprofit Hub: Because I’ve been nerding out about the conference and speakers, I thought I’d share some of my expectations about the conference. Obviously, there will be a ton of amazing, tactical presentations about how to ask more effectively and often, engage millennial donors and get your board into fundraising mode. But we’d like to cover three big themes that will unify this year’s AFP conference and bring deeper significance to the in-depth, micro-level workshops. Here they are:

Derrick Feldmann: Building a New Nonprofit Workforce With Millennial Leaders
The accelerated speed of change is today's reality. For Millennials this reality has created a new call to serve nonprofit organizations. It's a call to be a risk-taker in a time when others think risk should be avoided because of economic or other uncertainties. It's a call to lead a team while others seek to maintain operations at the status quo. It's a call to change the work environment not because someone's boss or board has told them to do so, but because their gut says that change is necessary and needs to happen now.
Derrick and Kari are presenting at AFP International Conference

They will share their insights about making a shop that consists of generational diversity not only work but excel. Both groups have much to contribute to the fundraising success at your organization. At the core of this session is the intersection of the incredible wisdom of more seasoned fundraisers and the innovative and energetic younger fundraisers. San Diego Community News Group - A man of many words teaches more than just vocabulary at OBE: Crakes’ lessons, however, tend to extend beyond the classroom curriculum and into education about compassion and quiet philanthropy.
Despite having tried to retire in 1992, Crakes’ big-hearted generosity and proactive ideas tend keep him busy one way or another.

Philanthropy 101
Philanthropy 101: Philanthropy 101 teaches high school students about philanthropy and civic engagement through hands-on experience. Students operate as a “mini foundation” and learn to explore issues in their community, develop a mission statement to focus on a specific need, publicize and manage a grant process, review and evaluate grant applications, conduct site visits with local nonprofits, and deliberate as a class to reach informed decisions. Based on this work, the youth leaders award $5,000 in grants to local nonprofits that are making a difference in their community. In addition, students dedicate time and energy to the cause through volunteer hours and creative fundraising strategies that boost the grant amount.
